Assignment 3 - Focal Length, Sensor Latitude (Final)

Symbolic of the Sun
1/100s f/22.0 ISO100 85.0mm
Title : Eclipsed by Time
This is one of the first group of photos that i have taken and one that i really like. It actually started with me trying to get the sun's reflection off my friend's watch and then i wondered how would it turn out if i under-expose the picture. The result is this picture. I have showed the picture to some of my friends and they commented that it either resembles a solar eclipse or a sundial (literally). This pictures is at once solar eclipse and a sundial. It represents the sun in the passage of time as per the sundial. It also represents the sun in the way that it resembles a solar eclipse. Upon closer examination, one will notice that the face of the watch is upside down with the presence of a fingerprint on the surface of the watch. This is another level of symbolism in which our world is ruled by the sun and time and it has left a significant mark(in the form of the fingerprint) in our daily lives. We live by the minute and we are under the mercy of the sun.

Perspective shot
1/60s f/5.6 ISO100 18.0mm
Title: Spiral
Well, i chose this shot for perspective shot because i felt that it represent the word 'perspective' on two levels. The first being the way it leads the eye from the outside, spiraling in towards the center. The second level being it is another way of looking at things, in other words, looking at objects through another perspective.

Close up
1/60s f/7.1 ISO400 100.0mm
Title: Invasion
Well this picture is taken with a 100mm macro lens. It is the first time that i used a macro lens and i absolutely loved the way it brings out minute details which can transform seemingly plain objects into an interesting sight. I chose this because well, for obvious reasons, it is a close up shot which fulfills the basic criteria. Another reason is i thought the growth(i dont know it is rust or dust or a mixture of both) on the grills of the fan cover is very interesting.

Zoom Shot
1/20s f/5.6 ISO800 18.0mm
Title: Imagine
The main reason i choose this photo is i liked how it turned out quite shape. I took countless number of such shots in a futile attempt to recreate the sharpness. 1/20s is quite a fast shuttle speed and without the aid of a tripod, i am quite surprised that it turn out quite well. Other attempts fail due to me trying to zoom as quickly as possible but they all turn out very blur.

High Key
1/30 f/4.0 ISO1600 17.0mm
Title: Blending
I chose Blending as the title mainly because i feel that the photograph shows that the subject is in the process of blending into the background. I chose this shot because i like how her clothes appear to blend into the wall behind here and all that will be left is her disembodied hands and head. Besides fulfilling the requirement i thought that it is interesting as it encourages the viewer to imagine her when she is fully blended into the wall.

Low key
1/50s f/7.1 ISO400 40.0mm
Title: Showing the way
The lighting conditions where i took this photo is quite dark, which explains why with f/7.1, 1/50s and ISO400, the shot turn out quite dark. I chose this picture because i like how the candle turn out in the 'darkness' One can make out the paw print at the bottom of the picture. My first impression for this picture is "guiding light showing the right path to a lost traveler". After taking over a thousand shots over the course of the module, i found out that i am really biased towards low key photography.

I did not include this for my portfolio as i am not sure the presence of the sun will make it not so low key. I put in here just to share this picture as i like it very much. It was actually taken during the Canon Photomarathon 2008. It was a very very sunny day actually and i have to underexpose the photograph to a very large extend. I am sure my eyes were never the same again after this shot.
